What is condensation damp?
Condensation damp is the most common form of damp.It occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with a cooler surface, such as window or wall. The moisture in the air condenses into tiny droplets of water, which can cause problems such as mould growth and peeling paint.
How do you recognise condensation damp?
There are a few clues to look for in order to diagnose condensation damp, such as:
- Water droplets on ceilings
- Water droplets running down walls or windows
- Mould around windows
- Mouldy furniture
- Musty smell
Condensation damp can be caused by a number of factors, including: poor ventilation, cooking, bathing, and washing clothes.
To reduce condensation you can: ventilate your home properly by opening windows and doors, or using extractor fans, use a washer/dryer instead of hanging clothes to dry inside, use dehumidifiers.
If you have condensation problems, you can try to treat them yourself by cleaning the affected area with a mild detergent and water. However if condensation is severe, or its causing mould growth, you should call a professional to inspect the problem
